4. Manual (5MT/6MT) and SMG

  • Manuals are not TCU-based, though some ECU tunes can adjust rev-matching and throttle blips
  • SMG is an automated manual with hydraulic actuators (E46 M3, E60 M5). It is a different, largely unsupported system and is not flashable with xHP, so we do not offer TCU tuning for it

What Is a TCU Tune, and What Does xHP Actually Change?

The TCU controls every aspect of how your transmission behaves:

  • Shift firmness and aggressiveness

A Stage 1 or Stage 2 ECU tune can make more torque than the stock TCU calibration will pass through, so the box quietly caps what reaches the road. On the ZF 8HP behind a Stage 2 B48, the torque limiter starts capping delivered torque as it approaches roughly 500Nm, which is exactly why matching the flash to the engine is what lets that torque get to the wheels.

Setting sensible per-gear limits does two jobs. In the low gears it improves traction on powerful rear-wheel-drive cars, and across the board it helps prevent clutch slip on a tuned car. Two gears are the usual weak points: 6th gear on the 8HP and 4th gear on the 6HP are the common slip points on high-power builds, so those are the gears we watch most closely.

5. Line Pressure for High-Power Builds

For genuinely high-output cars, xHP can apply what it calls a line pressure bump, raising transmission line pressure by around 15% to increase the clutch pack's torque capacity. It is load-dependent, so it only comes on in high-torque situations and leaves normal cruising untouched. This is our first move if a build is slipping in 6th gear on the 8HP or 4th gear on the 6HP, because more clamping force is what holds the clutches together when the engine is making serious torque.

During an upshift the TCU normally pulls engine torque back for a fraction of a second to protect the drivetrain. xHP lets us tune how much. 7. Drag Race Mode and Custom Launch Control

For straight-line performance, xHP includes a Drag Race Mode that disables torque reduction during shifts, maxes shift pressure, and raises the clutch-protection thresholds so full engine power goes down during launch and hard acceleration. It engages automatically during launch control and, on the 8HP, in Sport+ with DSC off above roughly 40% throttle (on the 6HP it activates in Manual under the same kind of load), so your normal Comfort driving is completely unaffected.

Stock launch control is calibrated for a stock car, so on a tuned car it needs re-tuning.   • Use maps and torque limits appropriate for your power level
  • Keep Stage 0 on hand, so the box can always go back to stock
